Heavy vehicles
Driver Safety Services offers training and licence testing for the heavy vehicle classes described below.
Driver Safety Services is a State Government (DIER) approved External Service Provider for Heavy Vehicle training and Licence tests in Tasmania.

Light Rigid (LR) - a rigid vehicle that:
- has a GVM greater than 4.5 tonnes, but not greater than 8 tonnes, or
- has a GVM not greater than 8 tonnes and is constructed or equipped to seat more than 12 adults.
(May tow a trailer with a GVM no more than 9 tonnes)
Medium Rigid (MR)
A rigid truck or bus that::
- has no more than 2 axles, and
- has a GVM greater than 8 tonnes.
Heavy Rigid (HR)
An articulated bus or a rigid truck or bus that::
- has 3 or more axles; and
- has a GVM greater than 8 tonnes.
(May tow a trailer with a GVM no more than 9 tonnes).
Heavy Combination (HC)
A prime mover to which is attached:
- a single semi-trailer, or
- a converter dolly and single semi-trailer.
HC can also be a rigid motor vehicle towing a trailer with a GVM greater than 9 tonnes.
Multi Combination (MC)
A Heavy Combination vehicle with more than one trailer.
