Heavy vehicle licence tests
We provide specially equipped Medium Rigid, Heavy Rigid and Heavy Combination vehicles for training and licence testing.
The practical driving test establishes an applicant's ability to perform all required Test Specifications safely and efficiently without verbal or physical assistance.

When and where
Heavy vehicle licence tests are provided on demand (subject to assessor and vehicle availability) at Hobart, Launceston, Devonport, Ulverstone and Burnie.
- Light Rigid, Medium Rigid and Heavy Rigid vehicles: 1 hour
- Heavy Combination vehicles: 1.5 hours
Vehicles
Any vehicles used for practical driving tests must be roadworthy and loaded to at least 50% of its rated GVM.
Driver Safety Services has vehicles available for MR, HR, and HC class licence tests.
There are licence restrictions for auto-only and synchro-mesh-only vehicles. No restrictions apply where a non-synchromesh ('crash') type transmission is used.
